Songs and Rhymes About  WINTER

Winter themed songs and rhymes that can be used when planning activities and curriculum for toddlers, preschool and kindergarten children. Use for circle time, morning meeting, transitions - many of these can be used as finger plays, chants and full-body action songs.

When the snow comes out,

A chubby little snowman

Poor little nose is cold as ice! (Pretend to shiver)

You put your right mitten in,
you take your right mitten out,

and you shake it all about.
You do the snowkey pokey
and you turn yourself around.
That's what it's all about.
 
 
Way up high in the snowy tree
Lots of little snowflakes smiled at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could.
Down came the snowflakes
Oh, were they cold!

Frost is in the air,

Hear the sleighbells chime,

As nice as  winter time?
 
 
Let's go walking in the snow/rain (walk)
Walking, walking, on tiptoe (tiptoe)
Lift your one foot way up high
(hop on one foot)
Then the other to keep it dry.
(hop on other foot)
All around the yard we skip,
Watch your step or you might slip!
(pretend to fall)
 

Tune: "Deck the Halls"
Do you hear the pitter-patter? Hear the raindrops falling down.
Can you see the splashing water? All the raindrops on the ground.
Time to get our big umbrellas we don't want to get our hair all wet.
If you wear your boots and raincoat, we will go outside and splash a bit!


Tune: Alouette
Hibernation, time for hibernation.
Hibernation, time to go to sleep.

In the winter where's the bear?
Sleeping in its log or lair.
Where's the bear? Log or lair. OH!

In the winter where's the frog?
Sleeping by a pond or log.
Where's the frog? Pond or log. OH!
 
In the winter where's the snake?
In the mud beneath the lake.
Where's the snake? Beneath the lake. OH!

In the winter where's the bat?
In a cave is where its at.
Where's the bat? In a cave. OH!


(Singing game - children sit in circle.) 
Grizzly bear, oh grizzly bear, oh sleeping in your cave - 
Please be very quiet, very very quiet,
Do not wake her (him), if you wake her (him)
She’ll (he’ll) be VERY MAD!!!  GRRRRR!  (Take turns to act it out)


If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gumdrops,
Oh, what a rain that would be.
Standing outside with our mouths open wide,
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
(Repeat first 2 lines).

If all the snowflakes were candy bars and milkshakes
Oh, what a snow that would be.

Polar bears live in the Arctic,
They never get cold in a storm,
They swim in the icy cold water,
And their fur keeps them warm.

Polar bears have white coats,
And they walk quite slow.
It's hard to see just where they are...
Because they‘re as white as the snow.

I'm a little penguin black and white,
I waddle to the left and I waddle to the right.
I cannot fly but I can swim,
So I waddle to the water and jump right in!


Tune: Jingle Bells)
Icy toes, chilly nose,
Wintertime is here.
My teeth chatter,
What's the matter?
Wintertime is here, Oh! (Repeat)


Build a snowman, starting with his feet.
Put on some more snow, and pack it nice and neat.
Next we make a round ball and place it on the top…
Then hope the sun doesn't get too hot!


(Five Little Monkeys)
Five little snowpeople riding on a sled,
One fell off and bumped its head. 
I called for Frosty and Frosty said: 
"No more snowpeople, riding on that sled!" 
Four little snowpeople... etc.


Way up high in the snowy tree,
Lots of little snowflakes were winking at me.
I shook that tree as hard as I could - 
Down came the snowflakes
They felt SO cold!!

The mittens on my hands,
