Included:
- A poster of a large empty jar (Color and BW)
- 12 conversation hearts candies, each with a different verb/action written on it. Each of the verbs names a positive action that friends can do together. The verbs are: share, help, listen, smile, care, hug, laugh, play, talk, like, sing, give. (Color and BW)
- Another page of conversation hearts with the same 12 words, each with a picture to show the words in action. (Color and BW)
- A set of 12 flashcards picturing each verb and picture, large enough to be seen in a group lesson. (Color and BW)
- An emergent reader called “I Know How to be a Friend” with a page, picture and predictable sentence for each verb. For example: “I can share with my friend”. “I can help my friend.” (BW only)
Things to do:
- There are many ways to use this material. Here are some ideas. Introduce the flashcards in a small group, encouraging discussion about each.
- Cut out the conversation hearts, using the plain words or the words with pictures, depending on the age of your students.
- Give a jar page and a set of hearts (“friendlies”) to each child. They can choose from the hearts and paste them “into” their “Jar of Friendlies”.
- Use the emergent reader as a follow-up lesson, discussing again and reviewing the ideas and concepts they have been learning about.
- These ideas about friendship really can apply to everyone, no matter their age.
- Works well as part of a Valentine's Day curriculum, especially with Kindergarten and 1st grade.
- Low prep, easy setup, everything you need is included.
