Food

Songs about food

Here is a collection of the words for some songs and rhymes that co-ordinate with the popular early childhood theme "Food", and can be used when planning activities and curriculum for young children.

(Chant) Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?
______ stole the cookie from the cookie jar. Who me?
(Others) Yes you!
(Named person) Couldn't be!
(Others) Then who?
(Repeat)

A little red apple
Hung high in a tree
I looked up at it
And it looked down at me
"Come down, please" I called
And what do you suppose
That little red apple
Dropped right on my nose

Way up high, in the apple tree (raise hands over head)
Two red apples smiled at me (smile)
So I shook that tree as har-r-d as I could (Pretend to shake tree)
Down came the apples, mmm, they were good!!!! (Rub tummy)

Sung to: "Yankee Doodle"
Peel an apple, cut it up,
cook it in a pot.
When you taste it you will find
it's applesauce you've got!

Here we go round the apple tree,
The apple tree, the apple tree,
Here we go round the apple tree
So early in the morning.
This is the way we...
...climb the ladder
...pick the apples
...wash the apples
...peel the apples
...cook the apples

Sung to: "Boom! Boom! Ain't It Great to Be Crazy?"
Yum! Yum! Don't you know I love apples?
Yum! Yum! Don't you know I love apples?
Red and green and yellow, too
Yum! Yum! Don't you know I love apples?
Way up high in an apple tree;
I saw two eyes look at me.
I reached for an apple; it started to squirm, Oops! I found a wiggly worm!

That wiggly worm is a friend of mine; We eat apples all the time.
I let him crawl back to that tree
Hey! I see that worm looking at me!

Five little apples lying on the floor.
I'll roll one away, and that leaves four.

Four little apples hanging on a tree.
I'll pick one off, and that leaves three.

Three little apples, I know what to do!
I'll put one in my pocket, and that leaves two.

Two little apples sitting in the sun.
I'll pick one up, and that leaves one.

One little apple waiting in my lunch.
I'll eat it up with a crunch, crunch, crunch!

Look at the apple I have found
(circle hands)
So round and rosy on the ground
We will wash it and cut it in two
Half for me and half for you
(hold out both hands)

(Use real jelly beans or flannel board, 5 colors)

5 little jelly beans
I wish I had more!
I'll eat the (color) one
Now there are four!
4 little jellybeans
Tasty as can be
I'll eat the (color) one
Now there are 3!
3 little jelly beans
Only a few.
I'll eat the (color) one
Now there are 2.
2 little jellybeans
Eating them is fun
I'll eat the (color) one
Now there is one.
1 little jelly bean
The last one for me
I'll eat the (color) one
I'm as happy as can be!

Five little gingerbread men in a row
Not going to eat one no, no, no. (shake finger and head side to side)
But they look so sweet from head to toe
Crunch, munch...uh oh!
Continue until...

No little gingerbread men in a row
Wasn't going to eat one, no, no, no
But they looked so sweet that it's sad to tell
Crunch, munch... oh well!

Sam the Pizza man put a pizza in a pan,
And he put a lot of sausage on the top. That's good!
Now I know if he would only
Add the pepperoni,
He would have a nice-a pizza!
Serve it hot
I would!!!!!

(Tune:Row, Row, Row Your Boat)
Roll, roll, roll your dough
Smoothly as can be.
Roll it till it's big and round,
Then add some good toppings.

You put the oil in the pot and you let it get hot
You put the popcorn in and you start to grin.
Sizzle, sizzle
Sizzle, sizzle
Sizzle, sizzle
Sizzle, sizzle
Sizzle, sizzle
Sizzle, sizzle
POP!

Pop! Pop! Pop! (clap)
Put the corn into the the pot,
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Shake and shake it 'til it's hot. (shake)
Pop! Pop! Pop!
Lift the lid and what have you got?
Pop! Pop! Pop!
POPCORN!

 Sung to: "Sound Off"

Carrots, beans, and potatoes
Corn and peas and tomatoes
Mix and stir up in a pot.
Smells so good as it gets hot.
Soup's on-1, 2.
Soup's on-3, 4.
1, 2, 3, 4-Let's eat a good treat!

(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle)

Vegetables are good for me.

Veggie sticks are great to munch.
Carrots, peas, and broccoli,
Vegetables are good for me.

I'm round and red,
And juicy too,
Chop me for a salad,
Or dump me in your stew! (tomato)

(tune of If I Had a Hammer)
If I had a bagel,
I'd eat it in the morning,
I'd eat it in the evening
All over this land
I'd eat it for breakfast
I'd eat it for dinner
I'd eat it with all my friends and sisters and brothers
All, all over this land.

Way down yonder in the watermelon patch.

Watermelon, Watermelon,
On the vine, On the vine,
Sweet and red and juicy, Sweet and red and juicy,
Please be mine! Please be mine!

Watermelon, Watermelon,
Thump, thump, thump,
Thump, thump, thump,
I think you are ready- I think you are ready-
Big and plump! Big and plump!

Five big lemons in the bowl
One fell out and started to roll
It bumped the table and hit my toe
How many lemons in the bowl
1, 2, 3, 4
Four big lemons...

Bananas are my favorite fruit
(pretend to hold banana)
I eat one every day
I always take one with me
(put in pocket)
When I go out to play
(wave goodbye)
It gives me lots of energy
(make muscle)
To jump around and run
Bananas are my favorite fruit
(rub tummy)
To me they're so much fun!

(Tune: Clementine)
Picked a strawberry,
Picked a strawberry,
That was growing,
In the sun,
Then I washed it,
And I ate it,
And I picked another one.

Sung to: " Farmer in the Dell"

The farmer sows his seeds.
The farmer sows his seeds.
Hi ho the derry-o,
The farmer sows his seeds.

Other verses:
The rain begins to fall...
The sun begins to shine...
The seeds begin to grow.
The plants grow big and tall...
The farmer cuts his corn...
And now the harvest is on....

I took a little seed one day
I put it in a pot of dirt
In hopes that it would grow.

I poured a little water
To make the soil just right.
I set the pot upon the sill
Where the sun would give it light.

I checked the pot most every day,
And turned it once or twice.
With a little care and water
I helped it grow so nice(ly).

Peanut butter, peanut butter,
Jelly, jelly.
Peanut butter, peanut butter,
Jelly, jelly.
First you take the peanuts and you
Crush them, crush them.
First you take the peanuts and you
Crush them, crush them.
Then you take the grapes and you
Smash them, smash them.
Then you take the grapes and you
Smash them, smash them.
Then you take the bread and you

Spaghetti, spaghetti, you're wonderful stuff

You're covered with sauce and you're sprinkled with cheese

Spaghetti, spaghetti, piled high in a mound
You wiggle, you wriggle, you squiggle around
There's slurpy spaghetti all over my plate
Spaghetti, spaghetti, I think you are great!

Mix a pancake,
Stir a pancake,
Pop in it the pan.

Catch it if you can.
