- This is a sorting, cutting and pasting activity for all 26 letters, plus 5 long vowels.
- Cut and paste 4 initial letter pictures onto a crown mat. There are 8 pictures to choose from, 4 that begin with the featured letter, and 4 that do not. This can be differentiated by having the teacher offer less pictures to sort, or only offering the initial sound pictures that match the featured letter.
- 2 identical sets of pictures on one page, for ease of printing.
- There are 2 crown designs to choose from for each letter.
- Both short and long initial vowel sounds are used.
- The letter X has 3 pictures that end with “ks” sound.
- I have added an extra strip on each page to attach to the crown to go around the child’s head, but a strip of construction paper works just as well. Staple or glue, stapling is less messy and the crowns can be worn right away
- I recommend that, at the pre-K and early Kinder level, this activity is presented as a small group, directed lesson. Older Kinders can complete the project at a center.
