This is a sorting and categorizing activity, using items that belong to various rooms and spaces in an average house. An item can be placed in any room, if there is a logical reason for it to be there.
Pack includes:
7 room/space sorting mats, in color and b/w; one house exterior, in color and b/w; 7 pages of house items, one page for each room, in color and b/w; an emergent reader (“Where is Sam?”) about a lost dog in a house, in b/w.
Teaching goals:
Grouping related items; explaining how each item is related to each other and with the whole; house related vocabulary; storytelling; sight word recognition; both reasoning and/or creativity can be encouraged depending on your teaching goal and the developmental level.
Ways to use the activities:
• Center – print on cardstock and laminate room mats, print and laminate and cut out furniture etc. Children sort onto room mats.
• Cut and paste - Children color and decorate room mat(s) and cut out furniture. Paste onto relevant mats.
• Create individual books, or a class book. Staple rooms together on the left side, with the house picture as the cover. Furniture can be added (paste, Velcro etc) or not. Use as an oral language discussion or story starter lesson.
