## Constructing Sets of 0 to 5, and Recognizing Numerals to 5

$5.00

This product is available to members in the membership area at no cost. (Numbers page)

This activity set includes 10 mats, each with coordinating themed manipulatives to teach the concept of number from 0-5 to early learners. Also includes an assessment sheet. Most of the mats and picture cards feature animals in their habitat.

25 pages

Use these themed manipulatives to help children be able to:

• Freeform story: Use the base mat without any number attached, for each child, or in a center. Direct the children to place an object(s) on the mat e.g. frogs in the pond. Have another frog jump in. Let’s count how many frogs are in the pond now. Continue to add and subtract frogs, in a story fashion, counting them sometimes. Sing a song about frogs while working.

• Making specific sets: Use one mat, or print several for each child. Cut out the number(s) you wish to study, and tape or glue to the top of the mat(s). Direct the children to place frogs on the mats, corresponding with the number on it. Have them count each frog out loud as they place them. Depending on level, ask which set contains more, or less, and have them “prove it”. (Count both sets, or match them one to one). Have 2 mats with the same number at the top, and demonstrate equality.

• Hold up a large number card (included), without naming the number – have the children create the set on the mat that the number describes.

• Use the smaller pictures in each set eg flies with the frog set. The children can give one fly to each frog. Purposely give one less fly, or one less frog, and ask discovery questions about which set has more, or less. Ask them to add more to one set to make it equal etc.

• Use the correct terms while exploring and playing, so that they become part of the concept – set, more, less, equal, add, take away etc.

Use the assessment sheet to have the children draw the appropriate sets beside each numeral at various dates throughout the teaching sequence.
