CREATIVE ART TECHNIQUES USING COLLAGE AND GLUE

MANY OF THESE CREATIVE COLLAGE AND GLUE IDEAS CAN BE ADAPTED TO WORK WITH ANY THEME. CHANGE COLORS AND TEXTURES FOR DIFFERENT THEMES AND TOPICS

Sprinkle colored sand, cornmeal or rice on glue, which can be applied from a squeeze bottle or with a glue spreader

Drip colored glitter glue on wax paper in a scribble design. Dry overnight, then peel it off. Hang it, use as an ornament.

Glue pieces of torn or cut tissue paper onto wax paper, so that they overlap. Brush over finished work with a layer of glue. Let dry overnight, peel off and hang in window.

Stickers of all kinds – colored circle garage sale labels, reinforcers, stars, picture stickers. Make a story picture, a repeating pattern, any design. Talk about it.

Glue foam or wood shapes to each other, or to a background. Make creatures, flowers, designs.

Paper mosaic – cut your own bits and pieces, or use precut. Use all same color, colors that blend or contrast, various textures and shapes. Different types of paper or cardstock. Cut up recycled greeting cards, magazines, catalogs. Add accents with markers, or glue sequins, buttons etc.

Creative art techniques using collage and glue for preschool

Paper sack puppets with brown or white lunch sacks. Children cut their own decorating pieces, or use precut. Offer wiggle eyes, chenille pipe cleaners, demonstrate how to fold the paper so some pieces stand up.

Paper plate art – many variations. E.g. make a pocket by stapling on half of a second plate. Or staple 2 plates together, put some beans inside,

and decorate for a shaker. Add streamers. Make a mask or a puppet, add a craft stick handle. Similar projects with paper bowls and cups.

Mixed media collage – shiny paper, colored pasta, cut doilies, yarn, paper strips, glitter glue, pearlized glue. Make a “pretty” mixed media collage for some themes – doilies, glitter, shiny ribbons, pastel colors.

Draw a picture/design with colored/neon/pearlized glue.

Co-operative paper quilts – each child in a group decorates his/her own square collage – teacher attaches all the squares together to make a quilt shape. Can use colors and papers and shapes for a particular theme.

Foil collage. Cut or tear or squeeze bits and strips of foil. Color with markers.

Contact paper collage. Stick anything to the sticky side of a piece of clear contact paper. Nature objects, any paper, sprinkle glitter. Stick the collage to a window, or cover it with another piece of contact paper. Cut around the design

Rock salt collage. Shake a little rock salt in a plastic baggie with a small amount of food coloring.

Magnet collage. Use a piece of sheet magnet that has white paper on one side (office stores). Glue any collage pieces to it, make a refrigerator magnet if desired.

Paint or finger-paint on windows or glass door. Add a little Joy soap to help cleanup. Or spray on foam paint and use sponge rollers.

String or yarn painting. Dip 10” lengths into paint, and drag across paper. Use medium tempera, and push yarn into paint with brush if necessary. Also, paint-loaded yarn can be placed between a paper folded in half. Press down on top of the paper, and slowly pull the yarn out.

Marble painting. Cover several marbles on a spoon with paint. Slide them into a shallow box with a sheet (or shape) of paper on the bottom. Roll the marbles around. Also, a blob of paint can be placed on the paper in the box, and then the marbles are dropped in and rolled around.

Crayon resist – so many variations! Color with white or colored crayon (or paraffin or a candle) on construction paper. Go ahead – press hard and scribble. Paint over the top of it with thinned watercolor washes. Gold with teal blue looks super! Also, use salt with the paint. Either mix it with the paint before using, or sprinkle it on afterwards

Painting with baby oil on various kinds of paper, with watercolor brushes or cotton swabs. The paper becomes translucent, and it smells wonderful. Cooking oil is an alternative.

Butterfly blots – create symmetrical patterns. Fold paper exactly in half, then open and drop small blobs of thickish tempera on one side. Push it around a bit, and then close the paper. Open for a surprise, every time.

Creative art techniques for preschool using paint

Rainy day. Splash diluted watercolors on a large piece of paper from a brush.

Spray watercolors with spray bottles onto large paper, or onto snow outside, or snow put in the sensory box. Also spray clear water on t a fence or wall, or colors onto large paper attached to a fence.

Make your own paints with natural dyes. Boil onionskins or asparagus, or broccoli. Heat cranberries, blueberries or raspberries in a little water until the water colors. Strain it, put in a paper cup and paint with it.

Paint with ice cubes. Freeze water colored with lots of watercolor paint in ice cube tray. Put a Popsicle stick in each one when partially frozen. Paint on white paper, watch the ice melt. Also, dump the ice cubes (without sticks) into the sensory box, squirt with more water colors and sprinkle with salt (or rock salt).

Drip painting – use plastic eyedroppers or small brushes to drip watercolor onto a paper towel on top of newspapers. Or use large paper coffee filters. Or tissue.

Paint with feathers, using tempera. Needs several feathers to make a satisfying experience.

Paint rocks with thick tempera. Bring smaller ones inside to do it, or take the paints outside. They can be washed and painted again.

Spray some good smelling shave cream, of some foam paint onto a laminate table. Drip food coloring if you wish. Paint with brushes, combs, craft sticks, fingers.

Blow blobs of thinned tempera across paper by puffing through a straw to make a branchlike design. Add leaves, blossoms or fruit if desired.

Vary paint textures and scents. Add glitter, coffee grounds, dirt, crumbled leaves. Food scents from spice shelf – strawberry, coconut, lemon etc.

Paint with corn syrup, with food coloring added. Using paper cups helps cleanup.

Cotton ball art – dip in paint or powdered tempera, and press on paper. Drag the cotton balls across the paper, or dab with them. Let some remain adhered to the paint and dry.

Paint with crumpled balls of crepe paper or tissue. Dip a ball in a little water, and dab on the paper. The color transfers

Paint with vehicle wheels. Use washable vehicles with wheels that roll. Dip in medium tempera, and then roll them across the paper. Use wheels with various texture “treads”.

EASY ACTIVITY RECIPES FOR A PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM OR A HOME ART PROGRAM

Many of these recipes use food materials. Don't use them if you prefer not to use food products for art work.

Creative art activity recipes for preschool

Everyday Playdoh
Mix 1 cup of flour, 1/3 cup of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon cream of tarter in a bowl. Meanwhile, bring to boil 1 cup of water, one tablespoon of cooking oil and a few drops of food coloring. A little flavoring essence could be added, too. Pour hot mixture into flour mixture and stir. Add more flour if necessary.

Kool-Aid Playdoh
Add a packet of unsweetened Kool-Aid to boiling water in Everyday Playdoh recipe to strengthen the color and scent.

Self-hardening Playdoh
Mix 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of flour, and add ½ cup of water. Use the same day, air dry for about 48 hours, and paint if desired.

Peanut Butter Playdoh (edible)
Do not use this if nut allergies are present, or possible.
Mix together 1-cup peanut butter and ½ cup honey. Blend in powdered milk until mixture is not sticky, and a playdoh consistency. Double the recipe if necessary.

Fudgy Chocolate Playdoh (edible)
Mix together 4 tablespoons softened butter, 1/2 cup white corn syrup, 6 tablespoons cocoa, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 3 cups powdered sugar, and 3/4 cup powdered milk. Knead well.

Finger Paint
Pour about a tablespoon of liquid tempera on laminate surface or large piece of shiny paper. Add a few drops of mild dish soap.

Pudding Finger Paint (edible)
Add food coloring to prepared vanilla pudding, and finger paint on a paper plate.

Colored Rice and Noodles
Put the desired amount of rice or noodles in a plastic bag and add a few drops of food coloring. Close the bag and gently shake and squeeze until the ingredients are uniformly colored. Spread on a paper towel to dry for a few minutes.

Cornstarch Mix
Place ½ cup cornstarch in a bowl. Add water little by little to create a workable consistency. This mix alternates between liquid and solid.

Egg Yolk Paint
Separate the yolk from the white of an egg. Put the yolk in a small cup, and save the white for another use. Mix a few drops of food coloring and ¼ teaspoon water with the yolk. Make several colors with more yolks. Use a small brush or cotton swab to paint. This paint dries with a glossy finish on paper. It can be used to paint cookies before they are baked.

Buttermilk or Condensed Milk Paint
Mix drops of food coloring with ¼ cup buttermilk or condensed milk. This creates pastel colors

Corn Syrup Paint
Mix drops of food coloring with a small amount of corn syrup. Mix in small glass cups to see the translucent colors. This is sticky and glossy.

Bubbles
Mix together equal parts of water and Joy dishwashing soap. Make a wand by twisting a pipe cleaner into a circle with a handle.
