Creative Art

Creative Art

A collection of activities and ideas that can be used to inspire creativity and imagination.

Creative art in early childhood should be open ended, and opportunities should be presented every day. It is the process that is emphasized, not the end product. Describe the technique, and show the tools and materials to use, and then step aside.  "Cute" is not a concept to aspire to in creative art.  "Cute" projects usually turn out to be emphasizing following directions and little else. Explain to parents who may be expecting "cute" that your creative art projects will be developing personal creativity, cognitive understandings, making choices, vocabulary extension, sensory and science experiences, social and empathic skills (when it is a group project), small and large muscle motor skills and the glorious feeling of personal accomplishment. Sure, and having fun, too.  Encourage parents to ask "How did you make that?" rather than "What is it?"  Save directed art projects for holiday gifts, and turn it into an opportunity for teaching and learning a craft.   4s and 5s may be ready for simple stitchery, or weaving.

Print several copies. Children can cut or tear the pieces they need for their project.  The items on the page are not meant to be cut exactly on the lines. Offer glue, and perhaps other art materials that would be complementary for the theme, such as sand and aqua watercolor for the shell theme.  Adult can cut up page for children who are not cutting yet.
